MAKING QUINCEANERA SPEECHES ©2007QuinceaneraInfo.com During a Quinceanera, the celebrant gets to have fun with her friends and family in celebrating her fifteenth birthday and her initial step towards womanhood. There are many traditions in a Quinceanera and one of these is for the celebrant to make a speech. What is in the Quinceanera Speech? The celebrant herself usually says a speech but in some cases, the father or parents of the young girl might also say something on behalf of their daughter. It is ideal to make the speech not too lengthy, especially if it is the celebrant who will be addressing the guests. The speech should include saying a big thank you, mention the people who helped make the event a success, acknowledging the young girl’s upcoming part in society, appreciating the support of her family and friends and looking forward to the future. In the thank you part of the speech, you, the celebrant, might have to generalize most of the people that need to be thanked especially if there are too many to mention. It would be ideal, though, to name your family and close friends who need to be thanked for their support for you as you were growing up and for the big help they played in making the Quinceanera celebration a huge success. Parents are usually the first people that you should thank and it is a good idea to also be thankful to God (mention this in your speech, if you wish) for the guidance and blessings you have received for the first 15 years of your life. Acknowledging the help and support you have received from other family members and friends could also be included in your speech but make it short to accommodate other aspects of the speech which you would like to include. You may also say a general thank you for all the people who gave gifts and help for the party. Words of thanks, appreciation and acknowledgement are actually lumped together since they have a similar idea. The other part of a speech that you might wish to include are your plans for the future and a pledge to be a good member of society and to uphold your family’s trust in you. This part is like an assurance that, yes, you do understand what it means to be a grown up and what this entails in your life as a woman. It is an acceptance that you understand what is asked from you when you celebrate your Quinceanera. A birthday wish might also be included in your Quinceanera speech if you do not mind letting other people know your wish. Or you could give a generalized version of your wish, like happiness for all the people who are celebrating with you or blessings for everybody. What Not to Include in Your Quinceanera Speech Even though you are the celebrant, there are some things that are unwise to mention in your Quinceanera speech. These include in depth information about dead family members that might put a damper on the festive celebration, embarrassing friends, family members and other people in the guests list, mentioning private details about your life that might be misconstrued as too private or too forward by your guests and many other things that basically go against societal norms. Your parents might not relish you mentioning that they used to spank you when you were young or bringing up previous misunderstanding or fights, which are meant for close family discussions only. Your Quinceanera speech should be light and optimistic so as to suit the occasion. It should also be just an average of three to five minutes so as not to be too boring for such a young party. Always think about the comfort of your family, friends and guests when preparing the speech but at the same time put a little of yourself in it. ©2007QuinceaneraInfo.com
