Speak with the stylists personally, and if at all possible, make sure that it is a specific stylist that you like and are comfortable with doing your hair.

What sort of impression do you get from the salon itself? Ideally, you will have a place that is efficient, professional and clean. There is no excuse for dirt or grime in a place where people go to get their hair cut. How comfortable do you feel with the stylists and what does their experience seem to be? What sort of people do you see coming in and out and what kind of haircuts or styling are they getting?

Remember that clear communication is going to be key to getting you what you want. Have pictures of styles that you like and ask how they would translate on your face and with your hair. Be open to suggestions, but if they are being particularly stubborn or condescending, don't let them near your hair!
