QUINCEANERA DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY

©2007QuinceaneraInfo.com

The Quinceanera will not be complete if the traditional dancing of the Quinceanera with her set of damas and chamberlans is absent. A Quinceanera is the presentation of a young lady to the public. This is a celebration made during the 15th birthday of a girl thus it is called Quinceanera, coming from the Spanish word ‘quince’ meaning fifteen and ‘anos’ years.

The quinceanera dance performance requires 15 young people to perform it. It is composed of the celebrant with her court, which is composed of 7 sets of damas and their chamberlan or escorts. The dance is usually a waltz and choreographed according to the preference of the Quinceanera. This is one of the highlights of the event so it is necessary that it be performed well. The dance symbolizes the transfer of the young lady from childhood to adulthood. After the dance, she is already allowed to dance with other young men.

Presenting a great dance performance requires several factors. One of which is having a good choreographer for the dance number. The choreographer can be a relative who has already performed in a Quinceanera dance and is willing to teach the group. It can also be the Quinceanera herself, if she can work out the choreography and steps of the dance. In instances where there is no available choreographer from your family or friends, you can also hire a professional choreographer to take charge. There are several sites on the Internet who organize Quinceaneras and can provide the choreographer. You can allot an extra amount for the fee of the choreographer who will train you for the dance.

Aside from the choreographer, you should also choose participants who are willing to learn the steps of the dance. As much as possible, choose members who can dance the basic steps so that you will not have a hard time during practices. Make sure that every participant is willing to attend and will not be absent on the day itself. The dance is made for a group so when one is not present, it is difficult to let someone stay in his or her place. The participant and dancers should also have mastery for dance steps. It is expected that members of your court will work as much as you do, especially on practices.

Practice makes perfect. The dance choreography should be formed and completed at least 2 months before the main event. The remaining two months will be purely practice. During the practice, the members should bring a pair of shoes similar to what they will wear on the day itself. This is to let them experience the feeling on the day of the performance itself. This will also make them familiarize and get at ease with the shoes that they will be wearing for the day. Consistent practice should be made until it is perfected. Remember that dance as if this will be the last performance that you will make and give out your best.

The steps for the dance are almost similar to the Cotillion de Honor of a debutant. The court will dance a waltz and there could be a mix of other styles like tango and rumba. These really depend on the Quinceanera if she wants to incorporate more dance styles and steps.

On the day itself, relax and enjoy the dance choreography. Be confident while performing. Give out all the things that you learned during the practice. In case you commit a little mistake, just go on and continue with what you know. The dance choreography is meant for you to express yourself and your personality. Enjoy and make the best of it.
