Hair Highlights For Your Quinceanera

One of the more popular fashion statements made by teens now is being very liberal with what they do with their hair. For most, choosing from different novel haircuts, or even designing their own is how they express their freedom and individuality. Also, teeners have taken to coloring their hair, be it just highlights or a full dye job.

Between getting your hair dyed and having it highlighted for your quinceanera, you might prefer the latter. A hair dye causes your crowning glory to look like a two-toned rug when your hair starts growing from the roots. This does not happen when you have highlights because the difference in hair tones still seems to be part of the overall effect.

Additionally, hair highlights can be either permanent or not; non-permanent hair highlights are available in all kinds of interesting shades too, such as pink, green or orange suitable to the most adventurous of spirits. With highlights, you can use another shade as soon as the last one grows out, or you can stop highlighting altogether!

Full hair coloring will not give you this advantage because you will want to retouch your hair's color as soon as your hair roots start to show.

There are various ways of hair highlighting:

Foiling is used more commonly by professional hairstylists in salons. This is when a foil is used to wrap highlighted strands and separate those from the rest of your hair that you do not want touched. Hair painting on the other hand uses a brush, sort of like painting the house.

Hair painting products and the brush itself can be found in retail stores everywhere. It might interest you to know that there is also such a thing as low-lighting, which is the opposite of hair highlights. Whereas hair highlights target shades that are fairer than your own strands, low-lighting means darkening some strands of the hair.

Choosing the right shade for the best hair highlights

If you are planning to create an impression for your quinceanera, the right shade of hair highlights matter. If you aim to be funny and exciting, you can buy hair highlight sprays in different neon colors. You do not have to worry about detention the next school day; these highlights are washable. However, if you want hair highlights that you can wear from your celebration to practically everywhere else, then you will have to choose a shade that suits your skin tone and your natural hair shade.

Choose a shade that will be a lighter contrast to your hair but appropriate for your skin as well. Caramel colors are usually best for warm skin tones. If it is going to be your first time to get hair highlights, ask advice from a professional hairstylist.

Do-It-Yourself Hair Highlights

You can flip through different fashion magazines for guidance in highlighting your hair. Remember to pick a shade of highlights that is suitable for your purpose, hair and skin color as mentioned above.

You can get hair highlighting kits from the store. These kits would most probably mention if it is suitable for short, medium-length, or long hair.

Before you start applying the hair highlight, you should test for allergies. The best way is to apply a bit of the solution on your wrist and wait for about 24 hours to see if there is any reaction. If there's none (itchiness, or redness in the area), then you could go on ahead.

The best time to color your hair would be when you haven't shampooed it for a day too. The oils in your strands can protect it from hair damage that may be caused by the chemicals in the hair highlights.

Find an old top and an old towel that you could use; make sure that you would not mind getting these stained. It is too hard to keep on minding if you've stained your shirt while coloring your hair.

Go and apply the hair highlights where you can be near the sink, like in the bathroom. You might accidentally drop some of the colors on the floor or cause streaks on the wall. Tiles are infinitely easier to clean than the carpet. Also, being near the sink means it's easier to wash your hands and your hair afterwards. Besides, the mirror in the bathroom is very important as well!

Get your highlighting kit and read all the directions carefully; this is very important. You don't want to end up looking like a half-baked hairstyling project of a pre-pubescent kid. Everything you need should be in the kit: the gloves, the solution, the brush, and even hair conditioner. Make sure that you use all of it because they wouldn't be there without a reason.
